Carpet cleaning vs. replacing: when it's worth re-carpeting
By Dan, owner & lead technician·Updated May 31, 2026
Most of the time, cleaning wins — it costs a fraction of new carpet and revives carpet that looks worse than it is. But there's a point where you're cleaning something that's structurally done. Here's how to tell which side of that line you're on.
Cleaning almost always wins on cost
A professional clean is a small fraction of what new carpet plus pad plus installation costs. If the carpet is structurally sound and just looks dirty, dull, or has traffic lanes, cleaning is the obvious call — and it often surprises people how much comes back.
Signs cleaning will work
Clean it if you're seeing:
- Dull, flat-looking traffic lanes (soil, not worn fiber).
- Spots and spills, even old ones.
- General dinginess or a 'tired' look.
- Pet odor that hasn't soaked deep into the pad yet.
- Carpet under about 7–10 years old in otherwise good shape.
Signs it's time to replace
Replace it when you see:
- Fibers worn down to the backing in walkways — that's gone, cleaning can't rebuild fiber.
- Delamination: the backing separating so the carpet ripples or bubbles.
- Pad saturated with years of pet urine (a deep, returning smell on humid days).
- Significant water or mold damage in the pad and subfloor.
- Carpet past 10–15 years that's matted everywhere, not just in lanes.
Our honest call
We'll tell you straight: if a clean will get you two or three more good years, clean it. If you're going to be calling us back every few months to chase the same worn-out look or odor, that money is better spent on replacement. When it is time, we install too — so we have no reason to talk you into one over the other.
