How long does carpet last — and how cleaning extends it

By Dan, owner & lead technician·Updated May 31, 2026

Most residential carpet lasts somewhere between 8 and 12 years, but how you treat it swings that by years in either direction. Here's what determines lifespan by carpet type — and why cleaning is less about looks and more about how long the carpet survives.

Typical lifespan by carpet type

Rough real-world ranges for residential carpet:

  • Nylon: 12–15 years — the most durable common fiber.
  • Triexta (SmartStrand): 10–15 years, strong stain resistance.
  • Polyester (PET): 8–10 years — soft and stain-resistant but matts sooner.
  • Olefin/polypropylene: 5–8 years — used in basements and loop styles.
  • Wool: 15–20+ years with proper care — the longest-lived, and the most particular about cleaning.

Why dirt is what actually wears carpet out

It isn't foot traffic alone — it's the gritty soil ground down into the base of the pile. Those particles are abrasive, and every step grinds them against the fibers like sandpaper, cutting them from below. That's why traffic lanes go dull and matted: the fiber is literally being abraded away. Removing that grit is the single biggest thing you can do to extend carpet life.

How cleaning adds years (and protects your warranty)

Regular vacuuming pulls the surface grit; a professional hot-water extraction every 12–18 months pulls the deep grit a vacuum can't reach. Just as important: most carpet manufacturers require professional cleaning on a set schedule (often every 12–18 months, with receipts) to keep the warranty valid. Skip it and a warranty claim can be denied.

Signs the carpet is genuinely at the end

Matting that won't recover, fiber worn to the backing in walkways, and rippling or delamination mean the carpet is done regardless of cleaning. If you're there, see our guide on cleaning vs. replacing. If you're not, a clean and a good vacuum habit will keep it going.
